Mini Laser Scribing Machine for Photovoltaic (Solar) Cells

The system

Precision scribing, distilled to one wavelength.

A single-wavelength benchtop laser scriber for thin-film photovoltaics. The 1064 nm DPSS optical engine, motorised X–Y stage and Class 1 enclosure of the SP2L-LSM, re-packaged into a 400 × 420 mm bench footprint — air-cooled, single-socket, and ready to run in a teaching or research laboratory. Features & capabilities

Every subsystem, purposefully designed

  1. Single-wavelength DPSS engine — 1064 nm

    Passively Q-switched, single longitudinal mode, greater than 13 kHz repetition rate and over 3 kW peak power, M² below 1.3 — the same class of source used for P1 scribing on the full SP2L-LSM.

  2. Focused beam diameter — ≤ 20 µm

    Micron-level focused spot for fine isolation lines and high-aspect scribes, with scribing depth resolution below 1 µm.

  3. Motorised X–Y stage — < 20 µm precision

    Linear-rail stage with better than 20 µm positioning and 10–250 mm/s traverse.

  4. Motorised Z focus — 25 mm travel

    Accommodates substrate thickness from 0.3 to 3.5 mm and holds focus across repeated scribe passes.

  5. Substrates — Glass, PET

    100 × 100 mm standard with a 150 × 150 mm option; up to 3 kg on a ground aluminium tooling fixture.

  6. Class 1, interlocked — OD 5+ viewport

    Fully enclosed beam path, interlocked door, key-switch arming and latching emergency stop. No laser-controlled area or protective eyewear required in normal operation.

  7. Recipe-driven GUI — .dxf / .png

    Our own control software accepts .dxf and .png geometry, drives laser and X–Y–Z motion together, and stores a named recipe per substrate.

  8. Services — Air-cooled, no chiller

    Fully air-cooled and gas-free. One 230 V socket under 400 W is the entire facility requirement.

  9. Support & warranty — 1 year, 5-yr spares

    On-site installation and operator training, one-year warranty, and spare-parts availability for a minimum of five years.

Principle of operation

Why a single wavelength

Most thin-film laboratories run one wavelength for the overwhelming majority of their work and reach for a second only occasionally. Committing the Mini to 1064 nm removes two laser heads, two sets of beam-delivery optics and the alignment burden that comes with switching between them — and returns that budget as a smaller envelope, a lower price and a machine that is ready to scribe from a cold start. Where a process genuinely needs 532 nm or 355 nm, the full SP2L-LSM carries all three wavelengths on a common stage. The two machines share their software, recipe format and service parts, so a laboratory can start on the Mini and scale without relearning anything.

SPPL software, written and supported by us

Our Windows application handles live view, regions of interest, minimum, maximum and average values, trend plots and alarms, with export to Excel and MP4 and retention of raw data for re-analysis later. An SDK is available where the system is being embedded into your own application.

Because the software is ours, a change you need is a change we can make — you are not waiting on an overseas vendor's release cycle.
